Obverse

The side of the coin or medal which bears the more significant design. This is often a portrait of a monarch or the subject of the piece.

Reverse

The opposite side to the obverse, derived from the Latin revertere which means to turn over.

Casting

This term refers to the process of pouring molten metal into moulds to create the final piece.

Striking

The medal is created by striking the blank disc between two tools, or dies, which have the design engraved upon them.

 

 

 

 

 

High relief

This is a feature of a coin or medal in which elements of the design are raised high above the surface of the medal.

Toning

Toning is an effect applied to the design to give the piece a matte finish.
