The shape of things to come (1969)

The unusually shaped 50p piece, the world’s first equilateral curved heptagon, was brought in to replace the ten-shilling note. Inflation had led to the note being used much more regularly and it now had a lifespan of just four to five months. A hard wearing and longer lasting coin was needed introducing the new denomination before Decimal Day helped aid the decimal switch-over.
