Crossing Continents Short Story Competition

Inspired by the 75th anniversary of the arrival of Empire Windrush, the Royal Mint Museum hosted a short story competition open to primary school pupils in the United Kingdom. Pupils were asked to write a short story of no more than 500 words about journeys all over the world.

The winning entry was written by 10-year-old Muduo Wang. Muduo’s charming story ‘M’ follows the adventures of an Old Chinese coin.

His story was chosen by guest judge, and celebrated children’s author, Onjali Q. Raúf. As part of his prize, ‘M’ was illustrated by guest artist Chanté Timothy.

He also won a set of coins for himself, and £5,000 worth of equipment and books for his school library.

You can find all the winning stories below.
