London 2012 Olympics - Volleyball fifty pence piece

Volleyball: Daniela Boothman

What got you interested in the competition?

I’ve always loved drawing from being at school, I don’t actually do it for a career but I’ve always enjoyed doing it in my spare time and I was off on maternity leave with my little boy so I had a bit of spare time, heard about the competition and was excited to submit a few designs.

Why did you choose volleyball for your design?

I chose volleyball when I looked through the list of sports, I did have a few ideas for a few of the sports but when I got to volleyball one I started doing a few sketches and yes I was really keen on it straight away and thought I could create a really good design from it that would look good on a coin.

What was the inspiration behind your idea?

My inspiration for the design, when I was doing the design for the coin I did a lot of research into the game and I looked through books and pictures online just to get a feel for it because volleyball is not something you see every day on the TV so I wanted to have a look at the movement of the players and when I captured that I printed loads of stuff off and was drawing all over it and the net going across the coin, my design instinct just led me to do that and I thought it looked good at that angle and the lines coming off the ball as well I thought it would really balance out the coin so a bit of research more than anything and a lot of research into how the players looked.

How does it feel to know your coin is going to be in the pockets of millions of people for years to come?

Well the thought of my coin being in circulation is so exciting and I’ve got two young children as well so I’ve been trying to explain to my eldest who is six that mummy’s coin is going to be in our change when we go to the supermarket and I work in a bank so I know I am going to say to customers, that coin that you are paying in, its mine, so yes it’s so exciting and it’s such an achievement and something that is so unusual as well because not many people can say they have done that can they especially a normal person like me so yes its really exciting, I can’t wait.
