London 2012 Olympics - Badminton fifty pence piece

Badminton: Emma Kelly

What got you interested in the competition?

I happened by accident to see a Design Week advertisement of it. I’ve always been very keen on the Olympics and any connection with that was useful, and I thought it would be a very good thing to design for.

Why did you chose Badminton for your design?

I choose Badminton as I knew I would enjoy drawing the shuttlecock, I then wanted to add people and the human element into the space and give those people a sense of dynamism and giving and showing people a game.

What was the inspiration behind your idea?

I tackled this project by doing what I normally do as an illustrator for a commission; I research for images, for shapes appropriate on the internet and then went off to a local sports shop and bought a feathered shuttlecock.

How does it feel to know your coin is going to be in the pockets of millions of people for years to come?

I’m very proud to know that my coin is going to be in general circulation, also very pleased that it will be linked to the Olympic Games of which I’m very, very fond of and I’m very pleased that a design of mine is going to be used day to day in a very human context.
