London 2012 Olympics - Archery fifty pence piece

Archery: Piotr Powaga

What got you interested in the competition?

I decided to enter this competition because it was a temptation I couldn’t resist I’ve always been interested in designing and creating things and when I saw this advert I said I must go for it.

Why did you choose Archery for your design?

I just wanted to do something not including a man’s silhouette and focus on one aspect which is the essence of the whole thing so first of all I was thinking about the eye and the muscle structure pulling the bow but it was too much and could not be expressed on such a small space so that when I asked my wife to grab something in her hand and pretend you are pulling the bow and eventually I found my design of the hand pulling the bow string.

What was the inspiration behind your idea?

My first perception of the idea to design something was to put some kind of link between ancient sports and Olympic Games today so I thought of archery and running.

How does it feel to know your coin is going to be in the pockets of millions of people for years to come?

The thought that my coin is going to be released into circulation nationwide is extremely exciting especially for me as a silversmith, that connection with metal, it's like having a piece of art in someone’s pocket it’s very exciting.
