World coins
Have you ever wondered what the pictures on our coins mean? We chose designs that express our national identity like Britannia, the King and plants that grow in the United Kingdom. The Royal Mint makes coins for many other countries around the world and they also chose designs which reflect their values and identities.
In this workshop pupils will look at pictures of coins from around the world, discuss the ways the countries are represented and place them on a map of the world.

Cut out coins
Download the pdf below which features pictures of coins from around the world. Pupils will cut out the shapes and stick the heads and tails sides together to make a double sided coin.
Research your coins. What countries are they from?
Download the teachers pdf fact file to help identify the different coins with pupils and to place them on a map of the world. Alternatively pupils may wish to use Google Earth to find out more about the countries represented by the coins.
Design your own coin
Now you have looked at coins of the world, ask pupils to design their own coins. How would they represent themselves?
