London 2012 Olympics - Hockey fifty pence piece

Hockey: Robert Evans

What got you interested in the competition?

When I saw this competition it seemed like an ideal opportunity to get involved with the Olympic Games as I have a lifelong interest in athletics so this seemed great.

Why did you choose hockey for your design?

I chose and entered a few different sports but hockey did appeal to me because of the action which I wanted to try and portray on a small coin, the heart of the action as well as the conflict, it appealed to me.

What was the inspiration behind your idea?

For my hockey design I got in touch with the University of Glamorgan who were good enough to give me two international standard hockey players for the afternoon in a gymnasium. I went along with my camera and took lots of shots of them so I had enough photographs to work with to enable me to get all the information for the detail of the design.

How does it feel to know your coin is going to be in the pockets of millions of people for years to come?

It will be great to see it out there, I have a few other coins which are in circulation but it will be great to see this one specific to the Olympic Games.
