Goalball: Jonathan Wren

What got you interested in the competition?

I decided to enter the competition after I saw an article in one of the London papers so I looked on the Royal Mint Website, it was very last minute, I did four designs for both Paralympic and Olympic sports and decide on goalball because I was interested in it, I didn’t know anything about it initially and after looking into it I thought it would be a good one to try out.

Why did you choose Goalball for your design?

I thought by choosing goalball as it’s a quite fast paced sport that it would work well as a bold, single image and I tried to capture the essence of the sport with speed hence using the whiz lines and on the ball I put a bell hopefully to explain to people who don’t know the sport the rules and something about goalball that they may not have picked up on before.

What was the inspiration behind your idea?

For research I obviously looked on the internet for various images of goalball and the sport and tried to capture the fast paced nature of the sport and make it as striking as possible.

How does it feel to know your coin is going to be in the pockets of millions of people for years to come?

It’s been a great opportunity and a real honour to be selected as one of the twenty nine, it’s fantastic and it is a good legacy to leave to my children.
