London 2012 Olympics - Cycling fifty pence piece

Cycling: Theo Crutchley-Mack

What got you interested in the competition?

I saw the competition and it looked fantastic but I didn’t realise it was to do with cycling to begin with and then when I realised it was to do with cycling it was great because I like cycling myself and art as well and I’m doing a college course with art so it was a fantastic opportunity for me.

Why did you choose Cycling for your design?

I’ve been into cycling ever since I was young and I have tried loads of different kinds if biking and I really enjoy it and I’m into trials biking at the moment which is absolutely great fun so that’s why I chose cycling as my design.

What was the inspiration behind your idea?

I’m really in to my art and I love doing projects and things like that so I did loads of research, I got all kinds of pictures even some of myself on my own bike and stuck them all up in my room and did some sketches to start off with and I ended up with this final design.

How does it feel to know your coin is going to be in the pockets of millions of people for years to come?

It’s the idea of having my design in my back pocket, buying something from a shop and seeing my design on the fifty pence it’s really weird but it’s a great feeling at the same time.
