Modern Pentathalon 50p Coin Design

Modern Pentathlon Video Transcript

Tell us about yourself - and about the coin you designed
My name is Daniel Brittain, I’m from Derby and I designed the Modern Pentathlon coin.

What got you interested in the competition?
I had just finished University and my father came in from work one afternoon and had heard on the radio that there had been an Olympic competition announced I researched it and started working on my designs that afternoon.

Why did you choose Modern Pentathlon for your design?
I picked Modern Pentathlon because of the challenge of getting five sports onto one coin.

What was the inspiration behind your idea?
I looked at all the individual sports and really wanted to get one movement to create all five sports so I went on the internet, put each sport into a search engine and discovered a picture of a swimmer who had quite a large splash behind him so I then visualised and played back and forth a horse jumping out of the water so I quickly jotted it all down and quickly and built in the other three sports to create the five sports for Modern Pentathlon.

How does it feel to know your coin is going to be in the pockets of millions of people for years to come?
I really can’t wait to see my coin in circulation I think it’s going to be amazing to go to the shops and probably get a fifty pence coin that I have designed in my change; it’s going to be incredible.
