Archery 50p Coin Design

Archery Video Transcript

Tell us about yourself - and about the coin you designed
My name is Piotr Powaga I’m from Yorkshire originally Poland and my coin design is archery.

What got you interested in the competition?
I decided to enter this competition because it was a temptation I couldn’t resist I’ve always been interested in designing and creating things and when I saw this advert I said I must go for it.

Why did you choose aquatics for your design?
I just wanted to do something not including a man’s silhouette and focus on one aspect which is the essence of the whole thing so first of all I was thinking about the eye and the muscle structure pulling the bow but it was too much and could not be expressed on such a small space so that when I asked my wife to grab something in her hand and pretend you are pulling the bow and eventually I found my design of the hand pulling the bow string.

What was the inspiration behind your idea?
My first perception of the idea to design something was to put some kind of link between ancient sports and Olympic Games today so I thought of archery and running.

How does it feel to know your coin is going to be in the pockets of millions of people for years to come?
I’m really amazed to have such a big audience of a few million people who can see my design, the Queens head on one side and my hand on the other is good company.

How do you feel about being part of the London 2012 Olympic Games?
This was the only way for me to be involved in the 2012 Olympics as I’m not involved with any sports so this is my contribution and it’s great.
